Bad Breath Causes

You can find people around the world with chronic bad breath (halitosis). This may be cold comfort when it’s your problem of bad breath. I just want you to know that there are many people who suffer from the same problem.

The Number One Cause of Bad Breath

Not brushing your teeth and cleaning your tongue and taking care of your mouth are the most common causes of bad breath.
It’s just that simple!
Do you practice good, regular oral hygiene? If not, that is the first place to start in the fight for fresher breath. You can find lots of “solutions” out there for having a fresh, clean breath, but the first place to start is a clean mouth.
Another Common Cause is…
Dry mouth. You may notice having a dry mouth in the morning especially, because during the night there’s less saliva produced in our mouth and less movement in our mouth, so our mouth naturally dries out.
Make sure you brush your teeth and clean your tongue and use a mouthwash before you go to bed. Use a mouthwash that does not have alcohol in it, as alcohol tends to dry out the mouth.
The bacteria that live in our mouth thrive in this dryer environment. If you wake up in the morning and you notice that you have a film of plaque on your tongue and the inside of your mouth, you may want to consider drinking some water in the middle of the night. This can help to break up the dryness and the production of bacteria and foul odor-causing materials in your mouth.
Another common cause of halitosis is post-nasal drip, or other sinus problems. Especially if you have a persistent post-nasal drip.
The drainage from your sinuses accumulates on the back of your tongue and the back of your throat. That drainage is a perfect nutrient for the bacteria in our mouth that cause less than fresh breath. Having that abundant supply of nutrients encourages the bacteria to reproduce, making the problem worse. So anything you can do to relieve the sinus problem can also have a positive effect on your breath.

Some Final Thoughts
So you can see that keeping your mouth clean and free of the nutrients for bacteria will help you find relief from your bad breath.
Begin to practice good oral hygiene, which includes cleaning your tongue, and using mouthwash.
Do you feel you already practice good oral hygiene? If you brush, floss and clean your tongue twice a day, perhaps once more per day would help – at lunch? Remember, the bacteria in your mouth are working away 24 hours a day! You may need to increase your efforts to have the fresh breath you desire.
You may find that your breath problems are caused by some condition I haven’t discussed here. There are many possible reasons for halitosis. There are also many possible ways to find relief!
There is no one magic bullet that fixes everybody’s breath problem. This means that you may have to try a number of remedies, you may have to talk to your doctor, or dentist, to find out what’s going on. There are tests that they can do.
It’s up to you to take the lead to find the relief that works for you, so that you can have a fresher, cleaner breath. Be persistent, try some different ways, get help when you need it, and eventually you will find relief for yourself.

Healthy Ginger

Ginger is something we are all familiar with whether it is as the main ingredient in ginger ale (or ginger beer as I prefer), as the pink slivers served pickled with sushi, or as that fibrous root with the pale yellow color and spicy bite that lends its flavor to those holiday cookie men and women. Ginger makes a great additive to soy sauce or honey in marinades and can even be found as a sugary hard candy.
But this root has a much deeper and richer history as a Chinese herbal remedy.
Ginger is known as Sheng Jiang in Chinese herbal medicine and if you’ve ever put a piece of fresh ginger root in your mouth, you instantly recognize that its classification as a pungent, warm herb is spot on. It travels to the Lung, Spleen, and Stomach channels in the body and falls under the group of herbal medicines that are known to Release the Exterior in the case of Wind Cold Invasion. The Lung channel is a primary culprit to be invaded by Wind… a Chinese term often equated with the bacteria or virus that cause the common cold. The Cold aspect of a Wind Cold Invasion indicates that the patient is suffering from a cold that doesn’t involve sweating and usually has a tongue with a white coat. By opening the pores (Release the Exterior) and inducing sweating, which ginger certainly can do, you theoretically expel the pathogens and can decrease the amount of time a patient is struggling with the cold symptoms.
Ginger also travels to the Spleen and Stomach channels; two channels that have a great deal to do with digestion. This is where ginger’s Chinese herbal medicine actions correspond closely with how Western medicine might use this herb. Ginger is a great anti-nausea and anti-emetic, or anti-vomiting, supplement. It is typically prescribed for nausea and vomiting related to motion sickness, pregnancy, or chemotherapy. Several studies involving powdered ginger have shown promise for motion sickness and even for those that showed that ginger didn’t perform significantly different from the anti-nausea medications, it is important to remember that ginger won’t cause the drowsiness associated with those pharmacological meds. When prescribed for morning sickness in pregnancy, ginger performed well and women who took 1 gram a day for 4 days (short term use is recommended) felt less nauseous and didn’t vomit as much as those that didn’t. Of course, it is always recommended for pregnant women to speak with their doctor before starting any herbal therapy.
Another potential medical usage is found in the relief of joint pain from osteoarthritis. This joint pain would most likely be dull and achy in nature and improve when warmth is applied to the area. This indicates that the joint pain is classified as Cold. Thus the warming nature of ginger would help decrease the pain when taken internally.
It must be mentioned that despite the superior effects of ginger, too much of the spicy, warming herb can irritate the digestive tract. Perhaps this is why it is recommended that patients take it internally as a powdered pill or tea instead of as a raw herb and moderate its long term usage.
Luckily ginger is readily found. Many people that consume ginger regularly take a powdered preparation of the root. It can also be used freshly sliced and placed into a cup of hot water or tea. This is one of my favorites when I am feeling a cold coming on. It is a commonly used spice and you probably have a canister of powdered ginger in your kitchen cabinet just waiting to be sprinkled into your next batch of gingerbread… anybody got any good recipes out there?

Hiatal Hernia Surgery Alternatives

Hernia Types

There are two types of hiatal hernias. The first is a ‘sliding’ hiatal hernia. This is the most common type. It occurs when the lower part of the esophagus and the top part of the stomach slide up and protrude from the abdomen, through the hiatus in the diaphragm muscle (which is why this is also know as a hiatus hernia), into the chest cavity.

The second type is a ‘para-esophageal’ hiatal hernia. This is a less common but more serious hernia which involves part of the stomach pushing up through the diaphragm next to the esophagus.The risk with this type of hernia is that blood flow to part of the stomach can be restricted, meaning people with this type are more likely to be recommended for hiatal hernia surgery.

Hiatal hernias can happen naturally if you are born with a large hiatus (the hole in the diaphragm). They can also be caused by injury or accident which involves damage to the abdominal and chest area. In some cases it can be caused by too much pressure resulting from pregnancy or obesity.
